Bespoke Floating, Spiral, and Mono-Stringer Staircases
A staircase is more than a way to move between floors; it is a primary structural statement. At Urban Forge, we are New York's premier steel staircase fabricators. We specialize in designing and engineering custom stair systems, including dramatic mono-stringer floating stairs, space-saving spiral staircases, complex helical curves, and industrial-lofts stairs. Our master fabricators build structures that combine massive structural load-carrying capacity with clean, modern, and high-end aesthetics.
Structural Steel vs. Light Gauge Fabrication
Stair fabrication is a specialized branch of structural metalworking. Unlike ornamental shops that work only with thin-gauge sheet metals, we possess the tooling and certifications to handle heavy structural steel elements. We work with thick-walled carbon steel channel beams, I-beams, and solid plates. This heavy-duty construction ensures that your staircase has zero bounce, springiness, or vibration when walked on, providing a solid feel of permanence underfoot.
Strict NYC Building Code Compliance for Stairs
Staircases are subject to the strictest safety and code inspections of any building element. We handle all detailing to guarantee your custom stairs are fully compliant with local NYC building codes:
- Riser & Tread Sizing: Riser heights must be consistent and stand between 7 and 7.75 inches, while tread depths must be at least 10 inches to ensure safe footing.
- Load Requirements: Residential stairs must support a minimum live load of 40 pounds per square foot, while commercial stairs must support 100 pounds per square foot.
- Landings & Winders: We design winders and intermediate landings with precise turning radius geometry to satisfy code limits on continuous vertical rise.
Collaboration with Architects & Structural Engineers
We work in close partnership with structural engineers, general contractors, and architects from the early stages of design. We take precise digital on-site field measurements using laser scanners to account for existing walls and floor levels. Then, we generate complete shop drawings for engineering review and structural approval. All of our structural welds are performed by certified welders, meeting American Welding Society (AWS) standards and local building department inspection requirements.
Material Transitions & Architectural Finishes
We build steel staircase frames designed to integrate seamlessly with other luxury materials. We fabricate custom mounting plates and channels to support treads made of thick white oak, walnut, polished marble, or structural glass panels. For the steel frames, we offer a range of finishes: raw blackened steel sealed with penetrol, shop-applied rust-inhibitive primer ready for field paint, or durable electrostatic powder coatings that resist high foot traffic.
