Once the welding is finished and the grinding is smooth, the final step in custom metal fabrication is arguably the most impactful: the finish.
Two of the most popular finishing techniques we utilize at Urban Forge are Powder Coating and Natural Patina. While both provide protection, they offer entirely different aesthetics and maintenance requirements.
Powder Coating: The Shield
Powder coating involves electrostatically applying a dry powder to the metal and then curing it in an oven. The heat causes the powder to melt and form a hard, continuous skin over the metal.
The Advantages
- Extreme Durability: Powder coating is incredibly resistant to chipping, scratching, and fading. It provides a tough barrier against the elements.
- Uniformity: It delivers a flawless, even color across the entire piece.
- Variety: Available in thousands of colors, textures (matte, gloss, hammered), and even metallic flakes.
The Drawbacks
- Synthetic Look: While durable, it can sometimes look “plastic” compared to bare metal.
- Difficult Touch-ups: If powder coating does chip, repairing it in the field to match the factory finish is very difficult.
Patina: The Living Finish
A patina finish is a chemical process. Instead of covering the metal, we apply acids and chemicals that react with the surface of the steel, bronze, or brass to accelerate oxidation. We then neutralize the reaction and seal the metal (typically with clear coat or wax).
The Advantages
- Organic Beauty: A patina enhances the natural character of the metal. It shows depth, variations, and the “hand” of the fabricator.
- The “Living” Element: Unsealed or wax-sealed patinas will continue to evolve and age over time, interacting with their environment.
- Sophistication: Patinas are highly sought after for high-end residential projects and historic restorations.
The Drawbacks
- Maintenance: Exterior patinas, and even high-touch interior patinas, require regular maintenance (re-waxing or re-sealing) to prevent unwanted rust.
- Unpredictability: Because it’s a chemical reaction, exact color matching is challenging. No two pieces are exactly identical.
Which Finish for Which Project?
Choose Powder Coating for:
- High-traffic exterior projects like wrought iron driveway gates.
- Modern minimalist furniture where a solid, flat color is desired.
- Projects demanding zero maintenance.
Choose Patina for:
- Custom fireplace screens where the depth of hot-rolled steel adds to the hearth’s warmth.
- Bespoke brass door hardware that you want to age gracefully.
- Interior architectural accents where the organic texture of metal is the focal point.
