Modern Spiral Staircase SoHo
A continuous spiraling hot-rolled steel staircase with floating wood treads, designed for a luxury loft in SoHo.
Project Overview
This striking modern spiral staircase serves as the central artery for a sprawling SoHo loft. The client, a prominent interior architect, challenged us to create a structure that felt both monolithic and weightless.
Fabrication Details
The central stringer was CNC precision-rolled in our shop to perfectly match the CAD designs provided by the architect. We utilized heavy-gauge hot-rolled steel to ensure minimal deflection (bounce) as you traverse the stairs. The treads themselves are thick slabs of white oak, creating a warm contrast against the industrial matte black powder coat finish.
Architectural Integration
From a structural engineering standpoint, the staircase is entirely self-supporting at the base and the upper landing, eliminating the need for intermediary columns that would interrupt the open floor plan.
Technical Specs
- Total Rise: 144 inches
- Tread Count: 18
- Finish: Matte Black Architectural Powder Coat
- Tolerances: +/- 1/16th of an inch across the entire structure.
